The Fourth R: Release
Daily aches, tension, and stiffness in the neck, low back, hands, and feet are so common that even athletes and young people think they’re normal. These are the areas that bear the greatest burden from stuck stress.
I’ve never heard anyone complain about getting taller as they get older. We just seem to lose space in our joints and expect to shrink as we age. When the bones of your spine move closer to each other, the discs in between your vertebrae and the nerves that radiate out from your spinal column also become compressed. This causes pain. And any pain caused by compression is a sign that you have inflammation in your connective tissue, which can lead to joint damage. Sensory and motor communication can become impaired and delayed, leading to a more misaligned spine. Your Autopilot must then work a lot harder just to maintain a misaligned posture.
Losing joint space is less about aging and more about daily repetition and unaddressed stuck stress in your connective tissue. That’s why twisting your low back and cracking your knuckles or your neck never seem to help because these moves don’t address the cause of the pain. And by the way, doing such things can actually increase damaging stress and compression.
When you do the Release techniques, you’ll use small, focused movements to bring fluid flow back to the vital spaces of the neck, low back, hands, feet, and other joints that are challenged to remain stable from overuse, disuse, and accumulated stuck stress. You’ll also decompress unnecessary tension in the vital spaces that become misaligned and restricted from daily living.
These powerful techniques release joint compression and relieve tension and pain. The result is better range of motion and improved posture. And remember: Before you release your neck or low back, always rehydrate your tissue first. This is how you will achieve the greatest result in the least amount of time.
